HONGKONG. 17th. June, 1913.

I have the honour to inform you that the

Imperial German Consul recently waited upon to invite me to be

present at a reception at the German Club on the occasion of the

celebration by the German Community of the 25th.anniversary of the

accession of the Emperor William II. The Consul mentioned at the

same time that a Thanksgiving Service would be held on Sunday the

15th. instant.

In accepting his invitation I offered to arrange

that St. John's Cathedral should be placed at his disposal for the

Thanksgiving Service and I suggested that the Duke of Cornwall's

Light Infantry would no doubt be glad to lend their band for the

occasion.

These sugestions were cordially accepted and

on the löth. instant a very impressive Service was held in St.

John's Cathedral. I attended, with my Staff, in uniform. The

General Officer Commanding, South China, and a large number of the

Officers of the Garrison; the Comodore and several Naval Officers;

the Chief Justice and other leading Civil Officials, were also

present and the Church was well filled with members of the German

and English Community, Foreign Consular Officers, and sailors of

the German Gunboat "Iltis" which was in Port. The chancel was
